The Big Knob - User Research

The Mackie Big Knob can be found in studios around the world as a monitor switcher and controller.  In order to refine the product line and what it offered to our consumers, I conducted research on the current product offering, as well as the current state of a studio workflow.

Current mixing studios usually have a variety of speakers for playback and monitoring.  Being able to switch and control these through one unified device allows efficient workflow and better focus.

Product Scope

From the research, it was decided to create three different offerings, appealing to different levels of consumer.  From a simple A/B switcher, up to a controller/USB interface, we addressed these different tiers through design and functionality.

Areas for improvement were identified and refined.  The new version of Big Knob needed to provide more access to controls, and a more informative interface.

2D and 3D prototypes were created to quickly test the control interface, size constraints, and manufacturing concerns.

At one point, testing unique meter feedback required creating an animation to share with stakeholders.

I designed custom knobs to allow a better workflow and user experience.  Working closely with manufacturers and engineers, a two-shot knob was created.

3D renders were created using Solidworks and Solidworks Visualize to inspect color, material, and finish properties as well as present to stakeholders.

The final product is refined and rugged.  It will fit nicely into any studio setting without drawing much attention, but always be ready for action.
